For those of you who know me well, you know that I truly love what I do. I have a passion for arch viz and I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life other than this.
It’s not often that I get the chance to talk to kids about my profession. So, when a flyer was sent home from my son’s school about volunteering for career day I couldn’t help but jump on the opportunity. (This is something the school does every year, but this is the first year I’ve had enough people working for me that I could take the time off.) Making the day even more fun, I talked my good friend, an architect, with a ton of personality, into joining me. This way we could talk about the design process from start to finish.
We got to share our stories and information about our profession with 4th and 5th graders who had selected our presentation as one of three that they wanted to see that day. We reserved the last ten minutes of each of our two presentations to view virtual reality projects with goggles that I setup.
I loaded five projects onto phones that were placed in the goggles in order for the kids to see a variety of work. After a few minutes, various school employees stopped in to see what all of the noise was about that they heard trickling down the hallways. By session two other adults and students came into the classroom to say that word had gotten out and this was the classroom to visit!
While that certainly made us feel good, I was glad to hear that we weren’t in competition with the veterinarian who brought a dog along and the firemen dressed in their gear who had to come to entertain the younger grades.
It was such a fun day getting to share what I love to do with so many eager, young faces. I was thinking I would be glad to check this off the list as something my son could know that I did for him, but now I’m thinking I might need to go back next year and get my dose of admiring children all over again!
